Smoked Sweet Heat Chili Jelly sounded really interesting to me. Years ago, Eric and I had a garden and we found a pepper called “Sweet Heat”. They were our favorite chilies we had grown that year. Fast forward 12 years later, we decided to have a small garden of chilies and tomatoes.
I found the sweet heat chili seeds over at pepperJoes.com and grew those, poblano, and hot banana peppers from seed. We had quite a few sweet heat peppers that needed to be used, so I decided to try creating a jelly. Of course, here at Mayhem’s BBQ, we can’t just follow a recipe, we have to put our own twist on things.
So I threw the peppers on the pellet smoker and let them get a nice layer of smoke. Because these peppers are thin skinned, I left them on there for an hour at 180. Then followed the recipe I found at Chili Pepper Madness.
I like the feature of adjusting servings, so I was able to adjust it down to be just 32 oz. I didn’t have an issue with the jelly setting up. My peppers did float to the top, so I flipped them upside down and let them sit in the fridge to chill. The Smoked Sweet Heat Chili Jelly is really sweet, and you don’t really get the sweet heat flavor of the peppers. We’ve got several seriously hot banana peppers that I’m going to try and see how that goes.
The recipe is very easy to follow and if you want to create your own, I recommend starting with the one linked above. If the banana pepper jelly comes out the way I hope it will, I’ll get the recipe up for everyone.
Happy Cooking,
Kortney
