What would you think if I said you can smoke ice cream?
No really, you can have smoked ice cream, and you should try it.
We got a cheap ice cream maker from Walmart. It’s a far cry from my uncle’s hand crank ice cream machine, but it did the job.
The trick to this is to cold smoke the cream as it cools down to room temperature. It does not take long as the cream can take on too much smoke flavor.
We followed this simple vanilla ice cream recipe at food network.
During the cool down period we put the cream on the grill and used a smoke tube of cherry wood for about 20 minutes or so.
We did let the mixture chill in the fridge overnight and then ran it through the ice cream maker. It was soft serve consistency – think Wendy’s frosty consistency. Let the ice cream set up over night in the freezer and you have smoked ice cream.
Drizzle a bit of grenadine on top to enhance the cherry flavor.
